Container Types & Capacities

Dimensions, payloads and cubic capacity for standard and specialised equipment.

Written for: Planners and warehouse teams

Standard dry equipment

20ft and 40ft dry containers cover most general cargo; the 40ft high cube adds cubic capacity without adding payload. Bromley Logistics' planners default to standard dry equipment unless a client's cargo profile specifically calls for something else, because it keeps handling and stacking straightforward at every port on the route.

Specialised equipment

Reefer, open-top, flat rack and tank equipment exist for cargo that cannot travel in standard boxes.

  • Reefer for temperature-controlled cargo
  • Open-top for over-height loads
  • Flat rack for over-width and heavy-lift
  • Tank containers for bulk liquids and chemicals

Payload versus cube

Most shipments are limited by one or the other. Knowing which decides whether consolidation or a dedicated box is cheaper. Dense cargo like machinery hits payload limits long before it fills the box; light, bulky cargo like packaging or textiles fills the cube long before it approaches the weight limit.

Getting equipment selection right the first time

Bromley Logistics' cargo-inspection step at origin exists precisely to catch a payload-versus-cube mismatch before booking, rather than discovering it once a container is already loaded and short of space or over the weight limit.

How this guide looks in practice

The advice above comes out of how planners and warehouse teams actually use Bromley Logistics operations day to day, not a theoretical checklist.
